Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 golfer and pre-tournament favorite, had a disappointing start to the U.S. Open, carding a 3-over 73, seven strokes behind leader J.J. Spaun. Other top contenders, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, also struggled in the first round. Scheffler's poor performance puts his chances of winning, or even making the cut, in jeopardy. Spaun's bogey-free 66 propelled him to the top of the leaderboard.
