Deepest French Shipwreck Yields Renaissance Treasures

Archaeologists have discovered the deepest shipwreck ever found in French waters, a 16th-century merchant vessel located 2,567 meters underwater off Saint-Tropez. The remarkably well-preserved wreck, found by an underwater drone, contains a cargo of ceramics, metal bars, cannons, and an anchor, offering valuable insights into Renaissance-era Mediterranean trade routes. While some modern debris is present, the depth has protected the site from looting, creating a unique time capsule of the past. The ship, likely from northern Italy, is believed to have been carrying goods for trade throughout the Mediterranean.
