Ocean Acidification Passes Critical Planetary Boundary

A new study published in Global Change Biology reveals that ocean acidification surpassed a critical planetary boundary in 2015. The study, conducted by researchers from Oregon State University, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, and NOAA, found that calcium carbonate levels, crucial for marine life, have dropped to approximately 17% of pre-industrial levels. This exceeds the previously established danger threshold of 20%, indicating that parts of the ocean have reached dangerous tipping points, threatening marine ecosystems and coastal economies. The researchers warn this is a significant environmental crisis, already impacting global marine systems, not just localized areas.
