Cole Escola, a non-binary actor, won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Play for their work in "Oh, Mary!" This makes them the first openly non-binary actor to win this award and the first to win for a play they wrote themselves since 1983. At the ceremony, Escola wore a custom Wiederhoeft gown inspired by Bernadette Peters' 1999 Tony Awards dress, paying tribute to the actress with the design and a vintage-inspired wig.
