A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is spreading globally and becoming dominant in some regions, including parts of Australia. Originating from the Omicron variant, it exhibits stronger binding to human cells and reduced neutralization by antibodies compared to other variants. While early research suggests it may spread more easily, it doesn't appear to cause more severe illness. The WHO advises continued monitoring, genomic sequencing, and updated COVID booster shots, which should still offer protection against severe disease.
