Record Memorial Day Travel Expected, Heavy Traffic Predicted

Read, Watch or Listen

A record 45.1 million Americans are expected to travel domestically for Memorial Day weekend (May 22-26), a 1.4 million increase from last year. Most will travel by car, leading to significant traffic congestion. HERE Technologies predicts major backups in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, with Detroit showing the largest recent congestion increase. New York drivers will face the most extra time stuck in traffic. For smoother travel, AAA recommends leaving early in the morning on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and before 1 p.m. on Sunday or 2 p.m. on Monday for the return trip.
