Disney to Fire TPS Employees After Supreme Court Ruling | JQJO

Walt Disney Co. will terminate Florida-based employees losing temporary legal residency in the US next month. Following a Supreme Court ruling allowing the revocation of protections for 350,000 Venezuelans, Disney notified affected employees under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of a 30-day unpaid leave. Those unable to secure new work authorization by the end of the leave will be dismissed.

The Supreme Court announced it will consider striking down a federal ban on distilling spirits at home. The ban, enacted in eighteen sixty-eight, was aimed at curbing tax evasion. Home brewing of wine and beer has long been permitted. The Hobby Distillers Association and others sued after the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau denied licenses. Two circuit courts split on the issue, prompting the Supreme Court to issue a definitive ruling. If the ban is overturned, distillers would still register stills and pay excise tax.

Survivors of recent U.S. disasters still wait for long‑term recovery money. The last federal allocation was for Hurricane Milton in Florida in October two years ago. More than ten billion dollars is needed to rebuild communities in Los Angeles county and St. Louis, Missouri. The Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program, which usually funds rebuilding after FEMA’s emergency aid ends, has not received new appropriations since Milton. Congress must approve money disaster‑by‑disaster, causing long delays. In July 2026 the program was written into law for three years, but no additional funds have been appropriated.

On Saturday, a fierce blaze erupted during training at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, killing four service members and injuring dozens. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military on domestic soil. Premier Danielle Smith reported that thirty‑nine people were hospitalized, with nineteen in critical condition, and that patients were transferred to four hospitals across Alberta. The military confirmed no indication of terrorism, and the cause remains under investigation. The tragedy prompted flags at half‑staff on federal buildings nationwide in honor of the fallen and injured.

The incident has drawn national attention to safety protocols during live‑fire exercises and the capacity of local hospitals to manage mass casualties. It also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Canadian forces stationed at remote bases.
