Paul Mescal, star of the gay romance film "The History of Sound," disagreed with critics who compared it to "Brokeback Mountain." At a Cannes press conference, Mescal stated that he believes cinema is moving away from traditional alpha male roles and that "The History of Sound" celebrates the love between its characters, not their repression. He praised his co-star, Josh O'Connor, highlighting their easy rapport on and off screen. The film received a warm, though not overwhelmingly enthusiastic, reception at Cannes.
