EU Court Rules Against Von der Leyen on Pfizer Texts | JQJO

The European General Court ruled against the European Commission, stating its explanation for denying The New York Times access to text messages between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the COVID-19 pandemic was insufficient. The court found the Commission failed to credibly explain the absence of these messages, deeming its claim of non-possession unconvincing. The ruling highlights concerns about transparency within the EU Commission. The Commission plans to consider its next steps, potentially appealing to the European Court of Justice. The case underscores the debate about the public's right to access official communications, particularly concerning large-scale vaccine procurement during the pandemic.

A Russian Geran‑3 drone struck the central park of Nova Vodolaha in Kharkiv Oblast on October nineteenth, killing six people, including two children aged eight and one, and injuring at least fifteen. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said the attack made no military sense, while President Volodymyr Zelensky called it an "absolute atrocity" and urged that sanctions against Russia remain in place until such killings cease. Prosecutors have opened a pre‑trial investigation into a possible war crime.

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two other alleged 9/11 plotters seeking to enforce a plea deal. The men had agreed to life sentences in a 2024 deal signed by a military commission judge. Days later, then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin rejected the proposal, claiming authority to override it. Military courts said Austin had no such power, and an August ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit favored the government. The Supreme Court’s decision removes a barrier to Mohammed’s trial before a military commission in 2028, where the death penalty is possible. Mohammed has been held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since 2006.

Federal officials carried out a major voter‑fraud operation in Commerce, California, on Monday morning, arresting more than two dozen people accused of registering to vote as noncitizens. The action is part of the Department of Justice’s statewide "Operation Protect the Vote" initiative, which involves all four U.S. attorney districts in California. The operation follows a recent DOJ warning that processing ballots from suspected noncitizens could expose election officials to criminal investigation. The arrests come amid heightened tensions between the Trump administration and California over election administration and noncitizen voting allegations ahead of the midterm election.

Independent MP Helen Haines was struck by a car and severely injured outside her office in the regional Victorian town of Wangaratta. Police arrested a 43‑year‑old man at the scene and seized a knife, but have not confirmed that Haines was hit deliberately. The suspect was briefed by federal police, whose counter‑terror squad is assisting state officers, and told the national broadcaster that the incident was not an accident. The attack comes amid growing concerns among Australian politicians about rising threats and violence, with 1,067 reports of harassing and threatening behaviour against high‑office holders recorded in the year to June, an increase on last year.

The Supreme Court announced it will consider striking down a federal ban on distilling spirits at home. The ban, enacted in eighteen sixty-eight, was aimed at curbing tax evasion. Home brewing of wine and beer has long been permitted. The Hobby Distillers Association and others sued after the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau denied licenses. Two circuit courts split on the issue, prompting the Supreme Court to issue a definitive ruling. If the ban is overturned, distillers would still register stills and pay excise tax.

Democratic senators are demanding the Pentagon reveal the "true cost" of the war in Iran this week as the conflict shows no signs of being resolved.

Survivors of recent U.S. disasters still wait for long‑term recovery money. The last federal allocation was for Hurricane Milton in Florida in October two years ago. More than ten billion dollars is needed to rebuild communities in Los Angeles county and St. Louis, Missouri. The Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program, which usually funds rebuilding after FEMA’s emergency aid ends, has not received new appropriations since Milton. Congress must approve money disaster‑by‑disaster, causing long delays. In July 2026 the program was written into law for three years, but no additional funds have been appropriated.
