InventWood, a Maryland-based startup, is commercializing "Superwood," a material stronger than steel made from treated wood. Developed by University of Maryland scientist Liangbing Hu, the process strengthens cellulose within wood, resulting in a material 10 times stronger than steel by weight and highly resistant to fire, rot, and pests. The company has secured $15 million in Series A funding and will begin producing Superwood for building facades this summer, eventually aiming to replace steel and concrete in construction. Superwood boasts a rich, natural appearance and requires no finishing.
