First US Pope Leo XIV Elected: Traditions & Ceremony

Read, Watch or Listen

After the death of Pope Francis, a new pope, Robert Prevost, a Chicago-born missionary, has been elected. He chose the name Leo XIV, marking the first US-born pope. Following tradition, the election was announced with white smoke from the Sistine Chapel. The new pope's identity was revealed after he was vested in papal robes and received the Fisherman's Ring. He then appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, delivering his first blessing. A formal installation ceremony will follow within a week.
