Celiac Kissing Study: Gluten Exposure Risk Low

Read, Watch or Listen

A new study presented at Digestive Disease Week suggests kissing is safe for people with celiac disease, even if their partner recently consumed gluten. Researchers tested 10 couples, finding that while some celiac partners showed trace gluten in saliva after a kiss with a gluten-consuming partner, no symptoms occurred. Drinking water before kissing significantly reduced gluten transfer. While extremely sensitive individuals might be exceptions, the findings generally alleviate concerns about kissing and gluten exposure for those with celiac disease.
