The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts a strong aurora borealis display (Northern Lights) Thursday night across parts of the northern US. A Kp index of four indicates increased visibility and brightness, extending the viewing area beyond the usual polar regions. Alaska, Canada, and portions of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine are expected to have optimal viewing conditions between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. This heightened aurora activity is linked to the sun's solar maximum.
