Rare colossal squid swims into view in first deep-sea footage

Scientists have captured the first confirmed footage of a juvenile colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, in its natural habitat near the South Sandwich Islands. The footage, taken by a remotely operated vehicle at a depth of 600 meters, reveals details about the squid's appearance and behavior. This discovery, along with the first ever live sighting of a glacial glass squid, highlights the mysteries still surrounding deep-sea life in the Southern Ocean. The high-resolution video is providing valuable insights into the life history of these elusive creatures, which were previously only known from dead specimens.
