Peru's former First Lady Nadine Heredia and her son sought asylum in Brazil after a Peruvian court sentenced her and her husband, former President Ollanta Humala, to 15 years in prison for money laundering. Humala was immediately jailed, while Heredia and her son were granted asylum by Brazil under a diplomatic convention. The convictions stem from illegal campaign contributions received from Odebrecht, a Brazilian construction giant, and the Venezuelan government. Heredia's brother also received a 12-year sentence in the same case. Heredia and her son arrived in Brasilia and will begin the process of regularizing their immigration status.
