A health assessment of Gene Hackman's Santa Fe home, conducted after the deaths of the actor and his wife, revealed significant rodent infestation in outbuildings and garages. The assessment, conducted a week after the bodies were discovered, found rodent feces, a live and dead rodent, and a nest. While the main house was clean, the infestation posed a risk to first responders. Hackman's wife died of hantavirus, a disease spread by infected rodent droppings, while Hackman died of heart disease.
