The United States and the Philippines are deepening defense cooperation near the South China Sea, focusing on Balabac, a strategic island group close to disputed waters and the Spratly area. Balabac hosts a 300-hectare Philippine air base designated in 2023 as an Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement site, giving U.S. forces access. According to Reuters, the 2026 Balikatan joint exercises will run from April 20 to May 8, involve more than 17,000 troops, and include Japan, Canada, France, New Zealand, and Australia. The drills occur amid rising tensions with China, which has tightened control around Scarborough Shoal using ships and a floating barrier.

Cincinnati — The San Francisco Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Thursday when starter Landen Roupp allowed one hit over six innings and a two-out RBI double by Matt Chapman ignited a three-run seventh-inning rally. Roupp departed after 87 pitches; the Giants combined to allow a single hit while Reds batters struggled to reach base.

Giants relievers Ryan Walker, Keaton Winn and Erik Miller finished scoreless innings, with Miller recording his first career save as the bullpen preserved the shutout. The victory prevented a series sweep and moved San Francisco’s road trip record, while Reds rookie Chase Burns faced the minimum through six scoreless innings but absorbed the loss after late defensive miscues.

Los Angeles: Netflix chairman and co-founder Reed Hastings said he will not stand for re-election at the company's annual meeting in June and will step down as chairman after 29 years, the company said in a shareholder letter released Thursday. Netflix said he plans to focus on philanthropy and other pursuits.

The company reported first-quarter revenue of $12.25 billion, up 16% from a year earlier and modestly above analyst forecasts of $12.18 billion, and said earnings per share rose to $1.23 from $0.66 a year earlier—boosted in part by a $2.8 billion termination fee after the dropped Warner Bros deal. Netflix said it has not specified how it will use the termination fee and reaffirmed its mission to 'entertain the world.' It highlighted investments in video podcasts and live entertainment, such as the World Baseball Classic in Japan, and said it will use technology to improve the user experience and monetization, with advertising revenue on track to reach $3 billion in 2026.

Minneapolis. Hennepin County prosecutors announced Thursday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Gregory Donnell Morgan Jr. was charged with two counts of second-degree assault after Minnesota authorities say he pointed a firearm at occupants of a vehicle while driving on Minnesota State Highway 62 on Feb. 5; the arrest warrant identifies Morgan, 35, as on duty during the incident.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said Thursday she believes the case may be the first criminal prosecution of a federal immigration officer tied to the earlier enforcement surge that placed agents in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland and New Orleans; Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and prosecutors filed the warrant as the investigation proceeds.

Washington — U.S. District Judge Richard Leon on Thursday blocked above-ground construction of President Donald Trump's planned $400 million, 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom while permitting below-ground work on a bunker and other national security facilities at the East Wing demolition site, following instruction from an appeals court panel to reconsider security implications.

This decision prompted the administration this week to notify the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit of its intent to seek review; President Trump on social media called Judge Leon 'Trump Hating' and criticized the delay, while the National Trust for Historic Preservation welcomed the ruling, and courts will now address claims about congressional authorization and security exemptions.

Gulf of Oman — A U.S. Navy destroyer enforcing a new maritime blockade intercepted two oil tankers that had departed Iran’s Chabahar port on Tuesday and ordered them to turn back, according to Reuters. The destroyer contacted the tankers by radio as they transited the Gulf of Oman, but it was not immediately clear whether any further warnings were issued. The interception took place under an order that applies to vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports and coastal areas, while ships sailing to or from non-Iranian ports are not supposed to be stopped. No boardings were reported during this specific encounter.

United States — The action is part of a broader U.S. Central Command operation that began at 10 a.m. ET on April 13, 2026, after President Donald Trump directed the Navy to block ships connected to Iranian ports. The blockade is one element of a wider U.S.-Iran standoff around the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy chokepoint that normally carries about one-fifth of global oil and gas trade. Reuters and AP reported that more than 10,000 U.S. troops are helping enforce the blockade, and that 14 ships turned around in the first three days rather than challenge it. U.S. officials have warned that ships attempting to force the blockade could face warning shots, boarding, or seizure.

MOBILE, Ala. Alabama saw widespread deterioration in drought conditions over the past week, with nearly the entire state slipping by at least one category on the U.S. Drought Monitor. Extreme drought expanded in the southeastern portion of the state while severe drought tightened its grip across much of Alabama, reflecting mounting stress on agriculture, water supplies and ecosystems. The worsening followed another dry week for most of the Southeast, where precipitation was scarce outside Florida. Temperatures across the region were generally near to slightly below normal, though western areas ran 3 to 6 degrees above average, which intensified moisture loss.

The broader Southeast also saw degradation: Georgia experienced an eastward expansion of exceptional drought levels and shifts in areas of extreme drought, while severe drought spread across much of eastern South Carolina and extreme drought grew along the North Carolina–South Carolina border and in parts of western and northeastern North Carolina. Florida was the lone exception, with coastal eastern and southern areas recording above-normal rainfall, including localized totals exceeding 6 inches that produced modest improvements along the Atlantic coast and parts of central Florida. Outside Florida, the lack of meaningful rainfall continues to drive worsening drought across the region, leaving Alabama among the hardest-hit states as spring advances.

United States: Walmart announced in 2026 that it will remodel dozens of stores across multiple states to modernize in-store and digital shopping, updating layouts, technology and services. Company statements this week list state-specific plans including 12 Indiana stores, 13 Georgia stores (seven in metro Atlanta), 18 Ohio locations and eight Tennessee stores slated for remodels.

Nashville and Columbus outlets and company spokespeople confirmed multi-year investment totals for recent upgrades — $807.7 million in Tennessee, $672 million in Ohio, $961.5 million in Georgia and $536 million in Indiana — and said remodels aim to speed pickup, expand delivery and refresh pharmacies, with work scheduled through 2026 and phased openings this year.

Fort Dodge, Iowa — Firefighters were dispatched at 2:22 a.m. Thursday to Westridge Townhomes after flames were reported in a two-story apartment building; crews located the fire in a middle unit that had spread to the attic, knocked down flames and ventilated smoke, and two people were taken to UnityPoint Health-Trinity Regional Medical Center for smoke inhalation while the State Fire Marshal joined the investigation.

Cobb County, Georgia — On Thursday, heavy flames consumed upper floors at Concord Crossing Apartments, prompting a defensive firefighting strategy and the evacuation of residents; eight units suffered extensive fire damage but officials said everyone escaped. In Hendersonville on Friday evening, crews battling a brush fire tied to Helene blowdown reported initial containment, and as of 1:30 a.m. Saturday the blaze had grown to 8 acres and reached 50 percent containment with Howard Gap Road closed.

BUFFALO — The Buffalo Sabres clinched a Stanley Cup Playoff berth this week, ending a 14-year postseason drought, and will host the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round at KeyBank Center on Sunday. Players including captain Rasmus Dahlin and center Tage Thompson are preparing for their first career playoff appearance with the club.

This weekend's matchup follows a season in which Buffalo secured its first division title since 2007, prompting former players and local partners to celebrate with community pep rallies and outreach events. Less than two weeks after the trade deadline, veteran Luke Schenn joined the roster and noted increased team bonding last month; the immediate focus now shifts to playoff readiness and game-day execution.
