At Yokosuka Naval Base, President Donald Trump turned a carrier hangar into a rally, addressing about 6,000 U.S. service members and more than 200 from Japan under a “Peace Through Strength” banner. Over 53 minutes aboard the USS George Washington, he tied his trade agenda to avoiding wars, said Japan’s prime minister told him Toyota will invest $10 billion in U.S. plants, and said missiles for Japan’s F-35s arrive this week. He bantered with crews, backed steam catapults and vowed an order mandating them, and needled Joe Biden, alleging Biden said he was a pilot.

Chris Evans is officially a dad. The 44-year-old “Captain America” actor and his wife, Alba Baptista, welcomed their first child over the weekend, with TMZ reporting the baby arrived Saturday in Massachusetts. No name or sex has been shared, and reps for the couple did not return requests for comment. Evans had said in November 2024 that he “absolutely” wanted children, calling “dad” an exciting title. The pair, who went public in 2022 and wed last year with ceremonies in Portugal and Massachusetts, have otherwise kept details close.

Hundreds of trucks now enter Gaza daily under the cease-fire, but relief groups say many carry commercial goods that residents can’t afford. Prices have fallen—one man said chicken dropped from about $33 to $12 a pound—yet necessities remain out of reach and often not nutritious. UNICEF doubled daily aid pallets, and the U.N. reports new nutrition centers, mobile health teams, and over a million hot meals a day, but needs far exceed supply. The plan calls for 600 trucks daily; WFP brings in 750 metric tons of food, far short of its 2,000-ton goal. Clean water remains scarce.

Venlo’s election mood is taut: immigration and housing dominate talk as Geert Wilders’s Party for Freedom campaigns on a halt to asylum and border troops. Wilders, whose party toppled the government in June, leads polls for votes but faces isolation in coalition talks and could lose seats. In the aging town, businesses need workers even as housing feels scarce. Plans to convert a monastery into a temporary asylum center sparked protests and counterprotests. Residents voice distrust and fatigue, linking newcomers to crime and costs, even as national crime rates have fallen across demographics.

Bionca Ellis, 34, was sentenced to life without parole for fatally stabbing three-year-old Julian Wood outside a North Olmsted Giant Eagle in June 2024 and wounding his mother, Margot. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge John Russo imposed the punishment after a jury in October found Ellis guilty of aggravated murder and related charges. Authorities said Ellis stole two knives from a nearby thrift store, followed the family, and stabbed the boy twice. Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley called the act “heartbreaking.” Ellis’ attorneys called the ruling wrong, plan to appeal, and had pursued an insanity plea.

Speaking aboard the USS George Washington off Japan, President Donald Trump criticized the Navy’s use of magnets on new carriers, claiming water can disable them, and said he would sign an executive order to restore steam catapults and hydraulic elevators. He asked troops and a “top-ranking general” to weigh in, cited cost overruns and $993 million spent on catapults, and has previously suggested China pushed a global reliance on magnets. Trump also disclosed he’d undergone an MRI the White House tried to keep quiet during his second medical exam earlier this year.

With the Ninth Circuit weighing an en banc rehearing on whether President Donald Trump can federalize the Oregon National Guard, the Justice Department acknowledged it overstated federal manpower in Portland. In a letter, attorney Andrew M. Bernie said an affidavit citing 115 Federal Protective Service officers was wrong; the actual surge was 86, including 65 security inspectors. The admission undercuts a central claim that FPS was near collapse, a point flagged by Oregon and questioned by Judge Susan Graber. A restraining order still blocks any Guard deployment as the court’s prior stay remains temporarily suspended.

Eleven people, mostly foreign tourists, died when a Mombasa Air Safari plane crashed in Kwale, Kenya, early Tuesday en route to the Maasai Mara. The airline said eight Hungarian and two German passengers and the Kenyan pilot were killed. The aircraft went down in a hilly, forested area about 25 miles from Diani airstrip; the pilot failed to make contact after departure, and controllers tried to reach him for 30 minutes. Investigators are probing the cause amid rainy, misty conditions. The wreckage burned, and witnesses reported a loud bang.

With a week to go, Democratic gubernatorial candidates Mikie Sherrill (New Jersey) and Abigail Spanberger (Virginia) will make a rare joint appearance Wednesday at a D.N.C.-organized Zoom rally, joined by Gov. Andy Beshear, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and D.N.C. chairman Ken Martin. The event, aimed at energizing volunteers, will stream on YouTube. The D.N.C. says it has invested more than $3.2 million in New Jersey and roughly that amount in Virginia. Polls show a tight New Jersey race, with Sherrill narrowly ahead or tied with Republican Jack Ciattarelli, running his third gubernatorial campaign.

Apple is developing solid-state buttons to replace mechanical controls on the 20th‑anniversary iPhone due in 2027, claims Weibo leaker Instant Digital. The purported “iPhone XX” would introduce haptic Side, volume, Action, and Camera Control buttons that have completed functional verification, mimicking real clicks while distinguishing light and firm presses. The design reportedly integrates the buttons into the frame and could use vibration-based audio with AI sound compensation. The rumor aligns with reports of a borderless, wraparound display, though the revived “Project Bongo” remains unconfirmed.
