At a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi, Vice President JD Vance called for sharply reducing legal immigration, criticizing President Joe Biden's policies and arguing the U.S. must prioritize cohesion and assimilation. He urged avoiding American deaths in unnecessary foreign conflicts, praised President Donald Trump's Middle East diplomacy and the strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, and defended Trump's use of executive power and National Guard deployments, citing Trump's arrest and later-dismissed charges after his reelection. Arne Slot’s rotated Liverpool crashed 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup last 16, as Ismaila Sarr struck twice before halftime and 18-year-old Amara Nallo was sent off; Yeremy Pino added a late third in the rain. Slot defended giving teenagers minutes, citing club tradition and a packed schedule, while Stephen Warnock and Pat Nevin criticized the approach as excuse-making and de-prioritizing the cup. Liverpool have lost six of their past seven in all competitions and four straight in the league, with Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Manchester City looming.

Federal prosecutors charged 12 people tied to protests against the Trump administration’s immigration policies, most stemming from a June 8 clash near a downtown L.A. detention center. Officials say the freeway-overpass unrest included fires, projectiles thrown at CHP officers, and tear gas deployments. Ten defendants are in federal custody; one is in state custody and one is a fugitive. Two alleged VC Defensa members face conspiracy charges linked to a Camarillo raid, and another man was charged in a separate June 6 pepper-spray assault. Prosecutors say 97 people have been charged overall, with mixed court outcomes.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted the team’s run is "not good enough" after a 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield, but said the result hasn’t increased pressure. With 10 changes from the Brentford loss, goals from Ismaïla Sarr and Yeremy Pino sealed Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven. Slot noted the fans’ backing even at 2-0 and expects strong support on Saturday. Liverpool could be boosted by Ryan Gravenberch’s return for this weekend’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa, while Alexander Isak remains a doubt after a groin issue on Oct. 22.

National Guard troops will remain mobilized in Washington, DC, at least through February 2026 after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth extended orders that were expected to lapse at November’s end, a move not previously reported, people familiar said. The deployment—2,387 troops as of Wednesday from DC and several states—faces a legal challenge from DC’s attorney general seeking a judge-ordered removal of roughly 2,000 troops. While Trump said in August the Guard would fight crime under Title 32 authority, members have mostly done city beautification work. The mission costs about $1 million daily, with pay at risk amid the shutdown.
