Former Democratic Rep. Katie Porter's bid for California governor faced scrutiny after a tense TV interview went viral. During the segment, Porter grew visibly uncomfortable under questioning by a CBS reporter, even threatening to end the interview. Rivals have seized on the exchange, questioning her suitability for leadership, with one calling her "unfit to lead California." Porter's campaign stated the interview continued positively after the heated moment, but the clip has fueled debate about her electability.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian indicated smooth operations amidst the federal shutdown, but warned of potential disruptions if it extends beyond 10 days. The aviation industry is already facing challenges with over 13,000 flight delays this week, partly due to air traffic controller shortages exacerbated by the shutdown. FAA reported a slight uptick in controller sick calls, a long-standing issue amplified by unpaid federal employees. Bastian urged a swift resolution to avoid impacts similar to the 2018-2019 shutdown.

Chinese doctors have achieved a milestone in xenotransplantation by successfully transplanting a genetically modified pig liver into a 71-year-old man. The patient lived 171 days post-procedure, with the pig organ functioning for 38 days. This peer-reviewed study, published in the Journal of Hepatology, demonstrates the potential of pig livers as a life-saving bridge for patients awaiting human transplants, despite the complexity of the organ.

Former FBI Director James Comey's legal team plans to challenge the authority of interim US Attorney Lindsey Halligan, arguing her appointment is unlawful. This strategy aims to dismiss charges against Comey and mirrors similar legal challenges against other Trump-appointed interim prosecutors. The defense contends Halligan exceeded the legal time limit for her position and lacked proper Senate confirmation. The Justice Department will defend Halligan's appointment, while a judge will determine her authority to prosecute.

ESA's Trace Gas Orbiter captured the closest view yet of comet 3I/ATLAS, revealing a fast-moving, fuzzy object. JWST data indicates an unusually CO₂-rich coma, while polarimetric observations show unprecedented light polarization. Precovery data suggests possible early activity. While orbital parameters are known and pose no Earth threat, a "bright streak" image from the Perseverance rover is not definitively confirmed as the comet, with some scientists suggesting it's an artifact. Details like size remain debated, and any claims of alien probes are unsubstantiated.

Bird flu, after a quiet summer, is resurging due to wild bird migrations, leading to early spikes in poultry infections and significant culling. Officials in states like Minnesota and Iowa are bracing for a challenging autumn, as the virus appears increasingly endemic in wild birds. While the current human health risk remains low, experts express concern about potential future human transmission and the impact of reduced mRNA research funding on vaccine development. Dairy cows have also been affected, with limited human infections and one fatality reported.
