Chinese President Xi Jinping drew a firm red line as China unveiled sweeping global export controls on products containing even traces of certain rare earths, aiming to stem new US restrictions. In response, Donald Trump threatened to cancel a planned in-person meeting with Xi — their first in six years — and said he would double tariffs on Chinese goods to 100%, along with sweeping curbs on “any and all critical software.” With only weeks before the planned talks, the exchange raised the risk of a renewed tit-for-tat trade spiral.

No. 5 Texas A&M stayed unbeaten, grinding past Florida 34-17 in College Station behind Marcel Reed’s 234 passing yards, a touchdown pass and a scoring scramble. The Aggies opened with three straight TD drives, then drained eight minutes late before Rueben Owens’ 2-yard run put it away. A&M is 6-0 for the first time since 2016 and 3-0 in SEC play, with coach Mike Elko stressing the need to finish. Florida, now 2-4 (1-2), went 1-for-10 on third down; DJ Lagway threw two TDs but was strip-sacked before a clinching field goal.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s Tel Aviv address was drowned out by jeers at a rally in Hostages Square, where families awaited the expected release of 20 surviving hostages from Gaza. Joined by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Witkoff stumbled and paused for over a minute, even mangling the prime minister’s name, as anger over Israel’s leadership flared. The rally was thought to number as high as 400,000. It came amid a Trump administration–brokered peace deal, with a ceasefire in place since Friday, while polls show waning support for Netanyahu.

Penn State’s season unraveled further in a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern, their third straight defeat, as quarterback Drew Allar left late with a left-leg injury and will miss the rest of the year. With no eligibility remaining unless NCAA rules change, the three-year starter’s college career is likely over. Coach James Franklin accepted blame while “Fire Franklin” chants rose from Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions, once No. 2 with Heisman buzz for Allar, are 0-3 in Big Ten play; redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer is expected to step in.

President Donald Trump’s threat of an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports ignited a late-Friday crypto rout, exposing risky leverage and prompting $18.28 billion in liquidations, according to CoinGlass, which called it the largest in crypto history. Bitcoin slid nearly 10% over five days, briefly dropping to $103,000 before bouncing; ether fell 14% and solana nearly 20%. The sell-off arrived as the Nasdaq and S&P 500 posted their steepest six-month declines, amid renewed U.S.-China trade tensions after fresh Chinese export curbs on rare earths.

An appeals court ruled Saturday that National Guard troops sent to Illinois by President Donald Trump may remain under federal control but cannot patrol or guard federal property for now. The court paused the case pending further arguments, following Judge April Perry’s temporary block for lack of evidence of a “danger of rebellion” amid Trump’s immigration crackdown. Citing law and history, Perry noted courts are open and federal agents have increased arrests and deportations. About 500 Guard members were mostly based at a U.S. Army Reserve Center in Elwood, with a small contingent at an ICE building in Broadview.

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 from Wednesday 14 October, halting security updates and leaving millions of PCs more vulnerable. The company urges eligible users to upgrade for free to Windows 11, while others can enrol in Extended Security Updates to receive security updates through October 2026 — free if they update to the latest Windows 10, back up settings and use a Microsoft account, or for $30/1,000 Rewards points (commercial devices: $61). Critics warn the move could drive unnecessary spending and waste; Which? says up to 21 million UK users remain on Windows 10.

Texas steadied itself after a ragged first half to beat No. 6 Oklahoma 23-6 in the Red River Rivalry, its first SEC win of the season. Trailing 6-3 at halftime, Arch Manning opened the third quarter with a 14-play, 75-yard march capped by a 12-yard strike to DeAndre Moore Jr., then Ryan Niblett’s 75-yard punt return broke it open. Manning finished 21-of-27 for 166 yards and a touchdown, adding 34 rushing yards, while Texas’ defense logged five sacks and bottled up injured OU quarterback John Mateer. “A gut-check,” coach Steve Sarkisian said.

Former Rep. Katie Porter’s 2026 bid for California governor came under fresh scrutiny after two videos fueled complaints about her temperament: one showing her brusquely threatening to end a CBS interview and saying she didn’t need the support of the 6.1 million Californians who voted for President Trump in 2024; another from 2021 capturing her scolding a staffer. Porter issued a brief statement about high standards, as allies like Teamsters California and EMILYs List rallied and rivals urged her to quit. Strategists say her next moves, including scheduled public forums next week, could decide her viability.

DALLAS — Ryan Niblett’s 75-yard punt return in the fourth quarter broke open the Red River Rivalry, as Texas beat sixth-ranked Oklahoma 23-6. Arch Manning went 21-of-27 for 166 yards and hit DeAndre Moore Jr. for a go-ahead 12-yard score to start the second half. The Longhorns, now 4-2, kept the Golden Hat and avoided a loss that likely would have ended any realistic playoff chance. Oklahoma’s John Mateer threw three interceptions 17 days after right-hand surgery, and the Sooners managed 258 yards. Mason Shipley made field goals of 22, 48 and 39 yards, missing from 55 and 56.
