Remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska on Sunday with hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding, ripping houses from foundations and sweeping some away. Rescue aircraft reached Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, where at least 18 and 16 people were saved, respectively. Authorities reported up to 20 people possibly unaccounted for, including three still missing in Kwigillingok as of Sunday evening; figures for Kipnuk were unconfirmed. More than 170 sheltered overnight in Kipnuk as water rose 6.6 feet above the highest tide, and at least eight homes were lost. The Alaska National Guard was activated as the governor expanded a disaster declaration.

Saturday Night Live’s latest cold open drew swift responses from those portrayed. Pam Bondi, sharing a screenshot on X, cheered Amy Poehler’s impression and asked Kristi Noem, “should we recreate this picture in Chicago?” Noem stayed quiet, but DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Entertainment Weekly, “‘SNL’ is absolutely right — the Democrats’ shutdown does need to end!” On air, Poehler’s Bondi defended her controversial Senate hearing, joking about the Epstein files and James Comey’s indictment, before Tina Fey’s rifle-toting Noem, in a DHS hat, described recruiting for ICE with a mock ad.

Stocks plunged after President Trump threatened steep China tariffs, prompting Andrew Ross Sorkin—promoting his book “1929”—to draw uneasy parallels to past manias. He says today’s rally, fueled by AI spending, may be a boom or a “sugar rush,” with speculation and debt rising as investor protections weaken. Larry Fink backs opening 401(k)s to private markets and sees a role for crypto, while Sorkin points to meme-coin manipulation—and a fleeting “Sorkin coin”—as cautionary tales. CEOs, he says, fear criticizing the administration. His bottom line: a crash will come; the timing and depth are unknowable.

New York City, Long Island and Westchester County are under a state of emergency as a nor’easter brings coastal flooding, high winds and travel disruptions through Monday. Coastal Flood Warnings and wind alerts are in effect. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams said agencies are coordinating and urged caution. Over 7,000 utility workers are on standby as outages begin. Airports report delays, and the MTA banned empty and tandem trucks on bridges and tunnels through 6 p.m. Monday. New Jersey also declared an emergency, and NJ Transit suspended the 319 bus route.

After nearly a decade studying the 1929 crash, journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin says today’s Wall Street echoes that era: soaring, AI-fueled gains, mounting speculation and debt, and fading guardrails. He predicts a crash—timing and depth unknown—amid record highs, Friday’s slide after President Trump threatened more China tariffs, and a push to “democratize” riskier investing. Sorkin contrasts 1920s margin-fueled mania with modern flows into AI, private markets and crypto, warning that looser SEC rules and a diminished Consumer Protection Bureau leave investors exposed. BlackRock’s Larry Fink urges adding private assets and crypto, calling them portfolio diversifiers.

Warner Bros. Discovery rejected an offer of around $20 per share from David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance as too low, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources. WBD shares closed Friday at $17.10, up more than 36% since Sept. 11, when Ellison’s interest emerged. The report said it’s unclear whether the bid accounted for WBD’s $35.6 billion debt. Paramount Skydance has held talks with Apollo Global Management about joining a bid; none of the parties commented. At Bloomberg Screentime, Ellison didn’t confirm a bid but argued Paramount needs more content and scale, echoing comments that the industry needs consolidation.

Baker Mayfield delivered early, not late, guiding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers past the San Francisco 49ers 30-19. Early in the fourth, he wriggled free on third-and-14, then hit Tez Johnson for a 45-yard touchdown to make it 27-19; the rookie celebrated his first score with a flip. Jamel Dean’s interception of Mac Jones on fourth-and-5 halted a 49ers drive and set up Chase McLaughlin’s 45-yarder to seal it. Jones threw for 347 yards with two picks while filling in for Brock Purdy. San Francisco lost linebacker Fred Warner to a right ankle injury.

A UC Irvine study published in Nature Metabolism reports that inulin, a fiber in onions, garlic, and artichokes, reshapes gut bacteria to consume dietary fructose in the small intestine before it reaches the liver. Researchers led by Cholsoon Jang found that priming microbes with inulin prevented fructose spillover, reduced fat buildup, boosted liver antioxidants, and even reversed signs of fatty liver disease in non-obese participants. The work suggests not all calories are equal and points to personalized nutrition — including targeted prebiotics or probiotics — while exploring whether other fibers offer similar protection.

Indianapolis saw a strange pregame turn before the Colts’ win over the Cardinals. Cornerback Charvarius Ward sustained a concussion after the inactive deadline, and quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered an orbital eye fracture when an elastic band malfunctioned. Coach Shane Steichen said Richardson was taken to a local hospital. The team made Riley Leonard the No. 2 quarterback and declared Richardson inactive. Richardson will miss time, potentially pushing Indianapolis to add another quarterback to the active roster or practice squad.

After intermittent left-eye pain, Allison Dashow was ultimately diagnosed with choroidal melanoma, a rare eye cancer affecting six in one million Americans annually. A second opinion led her to plaque brachytherapy on June 30, 2022; six months later, doctors deemed the tumor dead and she remains NED, though she now manages radiation retinopathy with injections every five weeks. As she raises awareness and leans on the Melanoma Research Foundation community, Dashow will receive the group’s Courage Award this month; interventional radiologist Dr. Tate Kirk will also be honored for work with metastatic cases.
