Cal Raleigh delivered another statement performance as the Mariners beat the Blue Jays 3-1 in Game 1 of the ALCS. After Kevin Gausman retired 15 straight, Raleigh smashed a sixth-inning homer to tie it, then steadied Bryce Miller—starting on three days’ rest—through an early wobble before shepherding three scoreless relievers. Jorge Polanco added RBI singles in the sixth and eighth. Seattle, arriving after a 15-inning Division Series clincher and cross-continent flight, retired 23 of the final 24 Jays on just 100 pitches, underscoring Raleigh’s MVP buzz even if ballots were cast before October.

This year’s comet boom continues as Lemmon (C/2025 A6) is poised for naked-eye viewing around the new moon on October 21, when skies will be darkest. Discovered in January by the Mount Lemmon Survey, it’s already striking in the morning sky and should become an evening sight soon. The comet will pass about 56 million miles from Earth. Its orbital period is roughly 1,350 years, dropping to about 1,150 after November—meaning a next return no earlier than 3175. Brightness can be fickle, but astronomers say it’s performing well and could delight Northern Hemisphere observers over the coming weeks.

A German woman has returned the limestone capital of an ancient column she took from Olympia more than 50 years ago, Greece’s culture ministry said. The piece, removed from the 4th-century BC Leonidaion, was handed to the University of Muenster, whose help saw it returned to Greece and Ancient Olympia. The handover took place on Friday. The ministry praised her “sensitivity and courage,” noting it is the third artifact the university has repatriated in recent years, after a twin-handled 1896 Olympic wine cup in 2019 and a Roman-era marble head in 2024. Officials called the gesture moving.

Netflix unveiled release dates and a teaser for Bridgerton Season 4, arriving in two parts: four episodes on Jan. 29, 2026, and four more on Feb. 26, 2026. Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha star, alongside returning cast. The season marks the series’ halfway point, with adaptations planned for all eight books and Seasons 5 and 6 previously renewed.

Donald Trump’s address to the Knesset marking a Gaza ceasefire and the return of Israeli and Palestinian hostages was disrupted by a yelling protester. Security quickly detained and removed the men as members chanted “Trump! Trump!” during the disturbance. Resuming, Trump praised Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff—credited alongside Jared Kushner in brokering the deal—and hailed the agreement as ending the war and an “age of terror and death.” The accord ends a two-year conflict, exchanges 20 Israeli hostages for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and drew Benjamin Netanyahu’s praise of Trump as Israel’s greatest friend in the White House.

The Eras Tour, spanning her 10-album “eras,” became the highest‑grossing tour ever, crossing $2 billion before concluding in Vancouver on December 8, 2024.

The WHO sounded the alarm over surging drug-resistant infections, warning that one in six lab-confirmed bacterial cases worldwide in 2023 defied antibiotics. Resistance increased in over 40% of monitored drugs. Globally, over 40% of E. coli and 55% of K. pneumoniae infections now resist third-generation cephalosporins, the first-choice treatment. Surveillance is patchy - 48% of countries reported no AMR data - leaving many countries "flying blind." The highest resistance was reported in Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean (about one in three), and in Africa (one in five), amid too few new tests and treatments.

Six weeks in, the NFL is upside down: a record 27 late game-winners, Baker Mayfield driving the 5-1 Buccaneers, and the Colts scraping to 5-1 after a bizarre pregame injury spree in a 31-27 win over Arizona. Baltimore’s freefall deepened with a 17-3 loss to the Rams as boos rained and the quarterback was benched. Kansas City steadied with a 30-17 win over Detroit, Marquise Brown scoring twice. In Miami, a 1-5 slide saw Tua Tagovailoa question leadership and attendance at players-only meetings. The Jets’ 0-6 start hit a nadir in London: minus-10 passing yards in a 13-11 loss.

Woody Allen mourned Diane Keaton, 79, in a tender essay for The Free Press, recalling the shy spark that became a romance after auditioning her for Play It Again, Sam. He described making films for “an audience of one,” praising her fearless taste and wide-ranging talents, from acting to photography and home decorating. Anecdotes—penny poker at a family Thanksgiving, her radiant laugh—frame a bond in which she starred in eight of his 50 films, including Annie Hall. He closes: the world is drearier without her, but the work endures.
