Videos from Maryland and suburban Chicago show confrontations with ICE, including an officer dropping his gun and another firing pepper balls—one striking Pastor David Black, who has sued. A CBS reporter says a masked agent shot a pepper ball at her car; police are investigating. Chicago advocates cite raids, two recent shootings, and what they call escalating, excessive force. ICE defends its training and tactics, citing more assaults on officers, while critics and experts question their preparedness and use-of-force. Body-camera footage in one fatal case and another shooting has also drawn scrutiny.

Maggie Kang, creator and co-director of Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters, told the BBC she opposes a live-action remake, saying its tone and comedy are built for animation and would feel too grounded in live action. Co-director Chris Appelhans agreed, praising animation’s freedom and noting many live-action anime adaptations feel stilted. Since its late-June premiere, the film has become Netflix’s most-watched movie in history, with a chart-topping soundtrack and a sing-along theatrical weekend gross of $18 million. Variety says Netflix and Sony are discussing a sequel, and Kang hopes to keep it animated, expanding Zoey and Mira’s backstories.

Donald Trump’s last-minute bid to bring Benjamin Netanyahu to a hastily convened Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh unraveled mid-flight after Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned he would not land if the invitation stood. Netanyahu, whose attendance Trump had secured in a call with Egypt’s Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, later declined, citing the holiday, amid threats of resignation from extreme-right coalition partners. With ICC arrest warrants against Netanyahu and more than 20 leaders due, the row underscored fragile diplomacy; images with Erdoğan risked domestic backlash and complicating Ankara’s proposed Gaza security role.

A total solar eclipse over North America on April 8, 2024, briefly reset birds' daily rhythms, a study in Science reports. Drawing nearly 11,000 observations from 1,700 SolarBird app users and about 100,000 audio recordings, researchers found 29 of 52 active species altered their vocal behavior. As darkness fell, some birds fell silent; when sunlight returned, 19 species erupted in a "false dawn chorus." Barred owls called four times more often, and robins sang six times their typical average, underscoring how sensitive many species are to rapid changes in light.

Gigi Hadid offered a rare public nod to her two-year relationship with Bradley Cooper, calling him “my love” on her Instagram Story on October 10. She posted a photo from a private screening of his film, Is This Thing On?, which premiered at the New York Film Festival and opens December 19, urging followers to see it. The gesture echoes her March remarks to Vogue describing their bond as “very romantic and happy,” while sources say they’re serious, not rushing, and have found a rhythm with their kids.

Wall Street rebounded Monday after President Donald Trump dialed back his tariff threats against China, posting “it will all be fine” and urging calm. The S&P 500 rose 1.3%, recouping nearly half of Friday’s worst-since-April slide; the Dow gained 483 points, or 1.1%, and the Nasdaq added 1.8% by 10:45 a.m. Eastern. China called for negotiations, even as Trump had days earlier floated a 100% tariff and cited limits on rare earth exports. Broadcom jumped 10.2% on an OpenAI collaboration, while investors eyed the coming earnings season.

Penn State fired football coach James Franklin after three straight losses, triggering a $49 million buyout that has angered some university employees amid upcoming commonwealth-campus closures. Librarian Heather Page called the payout “a slap in the face,” while English professor Andrea Adolph said it equals about six years of the New Kensington campus budget and reflects leadership priorities, noting President Neeli Bendapudi’s recent 47% raise. The buyout is the second-largest in college football. Associate head coach Terry Smith will serve as interim while a national search begins.

Social Security enters 2026 with a mix of modest boosts and big shifts. A projected 2.7% COLA would add about $53 a month to the average $1,955 benefit, though Part B premiums may bite. The official COLA announcement is expected Oct. 24 after a shutdown-delayed CPI report. Full retirement age reaches 67 for those born in 1960 or later; payroll-tax caps and earnings test limits also rise. Repeal of WEP and GPO under the Social Security Fairness Act is in effect. Even so, trustees warn the trust funds could be depleted by 2034, covering about 80% of benefits.

Starting October 14, Microsoft moves Windows 10 to end-of-life, halting default security updates. The article outlines three choices: upgrade to Windows 11 for free if eligible, buy a new device, or enroll in Extended Security Updates for another year. A free ESU path now exists in the US (Europe gets it without strings), but requires an administrator account, linking your login to Microsoft’s cloud, and staying within OneDrive’s 5 GB free backup unless you pay more. Enrollment appears in Settings > Update & Security; once added, your PC receives updates for 12 more months.

On a day of disparate headlines, Donald Trump visited Jerusalem to mark a Gaza ceasefire and hostage-prisoner exchanges, joking about his 2016 feud with Marco Rubio while hailing him as a future “greatest Secretary of State,” and signing the Knesset guestbook as MAGA-style “Trump the Peace President” hats circulated. The WHO warned antibiotic resistance is surging worldwide. In Alaska, airlifts followed flooding from Typhoon Halong that swept away homes. Separately, a jet-fuel spill at DFW was contained, five were hospitalized after a Huntington Beach helicopter crash, Michael J. Fox reflected on Parkinson’s, and Taylor Swift announced a Disney+ docuseries.
