As pickleball surges to nearly 20 million U.S. players, eye injuries are climbing, a JAMA Ophthalmology study finds, estimating 405 additional cases each year from 2021 to 2024. Using emergency department data, researchers say 70% of cases involved adults 50 and older and urge standardized eye protection, shown to reduce up to 90% of sports eye injuries. Risks include fast play on small courts and hits from balls, paddles, or falls. Experts recommend shatter-resistant polycarbonate eyewear meeting ASTM F3164, while noting awareness gaps and study limits. USA Pickleball did not reply to a request for comment.

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended calling the weekend's anti-Trump 'No Kings' demonstrations 'hate America' rallies, saying he was condemning the message, not Democrats. Pressed on ABC's This Week by Jonathan Karl, Johnson said he has 'never called anybody an enemy' and pointed to videos he said showed violent rhetoric, including 'fascists must die.' When asked about likening anarchists, antifa and Hamas to the modern Democratic Party, he defended his remarks, said he didn't mean the whole party, cited New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, and claimed a rise of Marxism.

After public pressure from Donald Trump to pursue his critics, federal charges against former national security adviser John Bolton have reignited debate over politics and proof. Unlike recent cases against James Comey and Letitia James — described by experts as politically motivated and difficult to win — legal experts say Bolton’s alleged mishandling of classified information may rest on stronger procedures and evidence, with misconduct described as more serious and sustained. Prosecutors must show he knowingly transmitted classified material. Similar classified-document episodes also involved Trump and Joe Biden, though Trump’s case was dismissed and Biden was not charged.

Scientists reported at the ESMO meeting in Berlin that cancer patients who received an mRNA Covid vaccine within 100 days before starting immunotherapy lived longer in retrospective analyses. Among more than 1,000 people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, median survival was about three years for the vaccinated versus just over 1.5 years for others; similar advantages appeared in metastatic melanoma. Mouse experiments suggest the shots activate dendritic cells that help T cells target tumors. Researchers plan a Phase 3 trial, while outside experts urge caution about early, retrospective findings.

Stanford survived a frantic finish, beating Florida State 20-13 after a goal-line tackle on an untimed down. Backup Kevin Sperry set up the chance with a 49-yard heave to Micahi Danzy and a penalty put the ball at the 2, but a shovel pass to Galvan was stopped just short by Matt Rose and Jahsiah Galvan after review. Cole Tabb rushed for 118 yards and a 1-yard score, and Elijah Brown replaced injured Ben Gulbranson to lead a 94-yard drive. The win was Stanford's third straight at home and extended the Seminoles' ACC skid to nine.

Americans interviewed by the Guardian describe shrinking carts, bare shelves and hard choices as Trump’s tariffs ripple through daily life. An S&P Global study says companies will face at least $1.2tn in extra 2025 costs, with two-thirds—over $900bn—passed to U.S. consumers; Yale researchers estimate households paying nearly $2,400 more a year. A Guardian poll ranked tariffs the economy’s second-biggest threat. While the White House argues the policy boosts manufacturing, Trump has threatened a 100% tariff on China even as he calls it "not sustainable." From steaks to cat food to tires, prices are up and routines are fraying.

President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video Saturday depicting himself as “King Trump” in a fighter jet dumping brown sludge on “No Kings” protesters below, set to Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” and watermarked by @xerias_x. He also reposted a clip originally shared by VP JD Vance showing Trump crowning himself and drawing a sword to Avenged Sevenfold’s “Hail to the King.” The White House marked “No Kings” day on X with an image of Trump and Vance in crowns above Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer in sombreros. CNN said nearly 7 million joined 2,700-plus protests nationwide.

At a routine ICE check-in in early August, Texas business owner Roman Surovtsev—stateless since leaving the former Soviet Union as a child—was detained, upending his family and small painting company. He previously lost his green card after teen convictions, but deportations to Ukraine or Russia have long stalled for lack of travel documents. Now, despite a vacated carjacking conviction and ongoing court challenges, ICE is again seeking removal; DOJ says re-detention is lawful. His lawyers argue deportation remains unlikely, while his wife describes lost income, missed milestones, and advocates’ warnings that due process is being eroded.

Millions of microbes colonize toothbrushes, fed by saliva, food traces and bathroom aerosols — even toilet plumes that can spray up to 1.5m. Most are harmless mouth dwellers, but studies have found pathogens including E. coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Candida, some carrying antibiotic resistance. While experts say the overall risk is low, it’s higher for people with weakened immunity. Let brushes air-dry upright and avoid covered containers; don’t share or let heads touch. Disinfection is mixed: microwaving can damage bristles; 1% vinegar or antiseptic mouthwash soaks reduce bacteria.

Andrew Ross Sorkin's new book, 1929, reexamines Wall Street's crash through human drama, drawn from archives including JP Morgan partner Thomas Lamont's papers. Eschewing charts for character, Sorkin profiles Charlie Mitchell, Carter Glass, and John Raskob, dispelling myths (no wave of window leaps) and tracing how speculation, easy credit, and tariffs fed a downturn. He nods to modern echoes - tariffs, democratizing finance, and Fed debates - while resisting neat parallels. Influenced by narrative business classics, the Too Big to Fail author and Billions co-creator centers the people whose choices shaped the catastrophe.
