The U.S. gross national debt has topped $38 trillion for the first time, Treasury data show, as a government shutdown leaves hundreds of thousands of federal workers unpaid and stalls the economy. Experts warned the impasse adds costs—past closures drained billions, including $11 billion during the 35-day 2018 shutdown. Michael A. Peterson noted the total crossed $37 trillion just two months ago and is growing at twice its 2000-era pace. With credit ratings lowered and interest costs projected to rise, Maya MacGuineas urged action as key trust funds face depletion in seven years.

Astronomers say asteroid 2025 PN7 has become a quasi-moon of Earth, sharing our orbit until 2083, according to a paper in IOP Science. Though it can seem to loop around us, experts stress it actually orbits the sun on a path similar to Earth’s and will later shift into a horseshoe pattern. First imaged by the Pan-STARRS telescope on Aug. 29, earlier data show it’s trailed us for decades. It’s extremely faint—magnitude 26—so no second moon will appear to the naked eye.

Jude Bellingham’s first goal of the season gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Juventus at the Bernabéu, his arms wide to a chorus of Hey Jude for the first time since April Fool’s Day. Madrid dominated possession and fired 27 shots, but had to sweat for it, as Thibaut Courtois denied Dusan Vlahovic one‑on‑one and saved from Khéphren Thuram in the final minute. Vinícius Júnior hit the post before Bellingham pounced; Michele Di Gregorio made eight stops, including a late double save. Madrid move to nine points, leaving Igor Tudor’s side below the cut in this league phase.

On Day 22 of the shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson conceded at his Capitol news conference that the GOP’s message feels "old" and said a strategy shift may be needed, even as he insisted Republicans are "99.8%" united in refusing to negotiate with Democrats until the government is funded. With the lapse now the second-longest on record, Johnson hinted the House may be called back. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries urged talks, stood by $1.5 trillion demands, and said Trump has spent more time golfing than talking to Democrats. A new poll found 45% blame congressional Republicans, 39% Democrats.

Astronomers report that comet 3I/ATLAS has flipped its tail to point away from the Sun, after a rare sunward anti‑tail seen in July–August 2025. Nordic Optical Telescope data confirm the anti‑tail vanished by September. Researchers say dust and ices respond differently to sunlight: far out, CO2‑driven jets pushed large grains sunward; nearer the Sun, water‑ice activity drives a classic tail. NASA instruments measured about 330 pounds per second of mass loss, mostly carbon dioxide. Ground‑based views are blocked through October as 3I/ATLAS passes behind the Sun. Most scientists call it a natural comet, despite Avi Loeb’s speculation.

One day after a high-profile ICE raid jolted Manhattan’s Chinatown, New York attorney general Letitia James unveiled a Federal Action Reporting Portal, urging residents to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across the state. The form accepts images, locations and consent for public use by her office. The Chinatown operation, which onlookers said involved more than 50 agents, saw masked officers detain a man as crowds trailed an armored vehicle. Outrage spread quickly: all three mayoral candidates and Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the raid, as did immigrant rights groups.

Regretting You, the first follow-up to the hit It Ends With Us, lands as a wan echo of Colleen Hoover’s breakout. Directed by Josh Boone and written by Susan McMartin, it’s faulted for missing chemistry, uncanny thirtysomethings as teens, and a lurching mix of grief and romcom fluff. Despite flashes from Allison Williams and McKenna Grace, its two-hour sprawl and streaming sheen blunt the melodrama, even as twists—including an affair and a fatal crash—pile up. The film’s uneven execution hints that the CoHo movie moment may be short-lived.

Tesla’s third-quarter profit fell 37% to $1.4 billion even as revenue rose 12% to $28.1 billion, squeezed by price cuts, low-interest loans and tariffs. Revenue from clean-air credits dropped 44% to $417 million. The company declined to issue a forecast, citing shifting trade and fiscal policies. Shares slipped about 1.5% in extended trading. Ahead of a Nov. 6 vote on Elon Musk’s proposed pay package, sales were lifted by a U.S. EV tax credit that expired at the end of September, while U.S. market share fell to 41% from 48% and energy-storage revenue jumped 44% to $3.4 billion.

Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You hits theaters Friday with a knotty web of romance, betrayal and loss—plus a baby of uncertain paternity. Dave Franco says someone recently reacted, What in the Maury Povich was that? as he, Scott Eastwood and Mason Thames unpack the chaos: Eastwood plays Allison Williams’ unfaithful husband; Thames dates their daughter (Mckenna Grace) after a fatal crash. In an AP sit-down, the trio trade influences, praise and laughs over heartthrob labels, shirtless scenes and Eastwood’s Taylor Swift Wildest Dreams music video appearance—while noting It Ends With Us’ outsized success.

Netflix will distribute the sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines under a licensing pact with Sony, signaling a collaborative partnership after the streamer acquired the first film for a reported $100 million amid pandemic delays. The original, praised for its hand-painted look, won eight Annie Awards and an Oscar nomination. Sony’s KPop Demon Hunters also landed at Netflix, becoming Netflix’s most-watched movie ever and prompting sequel talks. Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, through Lord Miller, and Sony Pictures Animation’s Kurt Albrecht are on board, with original film’s co-writer/director Mike Rianda and Aditya Sood as executive producers.
