FBI investigating Oakland museum storage burglary

Thieves made off with more than 1,000 items from an off-site storage facility for the Oakland Museum of California, authorities said, slipping in just before 3.30am on 15 October. Police and the FBI’s art crime team are investigating. The haul included Native American baskets, ivory carvings, daguerreotypes, jewelry and laptops. Executive director Lori Fogarty called it a brazen theft that robs the public of California’s cultural heritage, adding there were no staff on site and the break-in appeared a crime of opportunity. Staff discovered the burglary the next morning.
