Slow-moving Melissa continues to drift near 1 mph in the Caribbean, leaving forecasters with significant uncertainty even as the near-term picture sharpens. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane Saturday and a major hurricane soon after, bringing catastrophic flash flooding and damaging winds to Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. Up to 20 inches of rain could hit Haiti and parts of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Track options range from a Jamaica landfall early next week to a turn toward Cuba and the Bahamas; U.S. East Coast impacts are currently limited to waves and rip currents.
