Republican Optimism Plummets Amid Violence

A new AP-NORC poll reveals a sharp decline in Republican optimism about the country's direction, particularly among women and those under 45. The shift, from 70% in June to roughly 50% now, follows recent political assassinations and increased concerns about political violence and social discord. While economic anxieties also contribute, the rise in pessimism is significant, exceeding the drop seen after the 2020 election and comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic's initial impact. Overall, only about a quarter of Americans believe the nation is headed in the right direction.
