Washington — The Pentagon is deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group to U.S. Southern Command’s area, sharply expanding forces targeting narcotics traffickers. Spokesman Sean Parnell said the move will enhance detection and disruption of illicit actors across the Caribbean, Central and South America. The Ford will join eight U.S. vessels already in the region. The decision follows a U.S. strike in international waters that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said destroyed a Venezuelan gang boat and killed six—the 10th action and the first at night—in the Trump administration’s campaign, which has caused more than 40 deaths.
