Penn State fires coach James Franklin

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State fired longtime coach James Franklin on Sunday, a day after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern left the preseason No. 2 reeling at 3-3 (0-3 Big Ten). Terry Smith was named interim head coach as the Nittany Lions absorbed a third straight defeat and lost quarterback Drew Allar for the season. Franklin, 104-45 in 11-plus years, departs with a nearly $50 million buyout. Athletic director Pat Kraft said the program needs new leadership. Penn State now faces Iowa, No. 1 Ohio State and No. 3 Indiana in a rapidly unraveling campaign.
