An escaped rhesus monkey was shot dead early Sunday by a Mississippi mother who said she feared for her children after spotting the animal near her Heidelberg home. Authorities confirmed a homeowner found one of the monkeys and said state wildlife officials took possession. The animals had fled after a truck overturned Tuesday on Interstate 59, killing most of the 21 aboard; Tulane-linked experts said three escaped. Tulane said the monkeys were pathogen free, despite initial warnings, though officials still sought to neutralize them. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
