Minnesota Measles Rise Amid National Surge

Minnesota’s measles count rose to 20 after Dakota County reported three new infections involving unvaccinated children likely exposed by an unvaccinated adult, state officials said. Nationally, the CDC reports an average of 27 new cases a week since late August and more than 1,500 cases this year—the most since measles was declared eliminated in 2000—with reports across 41 states and D.C., at least three deaths, and 193 hospitalizations. Health officials urged MMR vaccination, citing 97% effectiveness; 92% of cases occurred in unvaccinated people. Herd immunity requires 95% coverage; U.S. kindergarten rates are 92.7%.
