Maria Corina Machado of Venezuela wins Nobel Peace Prize

Maria Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her campaign to restore democratic rights in Venezuela, the Nobel Committee said. The opposition leader, living in hiding after a post-election crackdown, said she was “in shock,” dedicating the honor to Venezuela’s suffering people — and to US President Donald Trump. UN chief António Guterres and European leaders hailed the decision; a White House spokesperson criticized the committee. It remains unclear whether Machado can attend the December 10 ceremony in Oslo. She is the first Venezuelan to receive the prize.
