Khalil Appeals to Halt Detention and Deportation

Attorneys for Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and legal U.S. resident once detained by ICE after pro‑Palestinian activism, asked the Third Circuit to uphold his release and block renewed detention or deportation. Khalil, freed in June after more than 100 days in a Louisiana facility, remains protected by a New Jersey district judge’s order even as a Louisiana immigration judge later ruled he should be deported to Syria or Algeria over omissions on his green‑card application. His team, including the ACLU, plans to appeal. A federal judge also eased his travel limits, requiring two days’ notice before traveling.
