Iceland Says It Is No Longer Mosquito-Free

Iceland has logged its first confirmed wild mosquitoes after a bug enthusiast’s wine-soaked rope lured three to his garden. Bjorn Hjaltason spotted the insects and alerted entomologist Matthias S. Alfredsson, who verified two females and a male; the Natural Science Institute announced the find Tuesday, and the trio now sit in Alfredsson’s freezer. Scientists say the likely recent arrivals near Reykjavik and an international harbor reflect warming temperatures and global travel. Identified as Culiseta annulata, a cold-hardy species, the mosquitoes could fade—or establish a population—prompting calls for closer monitoring.
