DOJ puts 2 federal prosecutors on leave after they described 'mob of rioters' on Jan. 6

Two federal prosecutors were placed on administrative leave after they referred to Jan. 6 defendants pardoned by President Donald Trump as a mob of rioters in a sentencing memo for Taylor Taranto, people familiar with the matter said. Taranto, 39, was convicted in May on firearms and hoax charges tied to 2023 incidents and is set to be sentenced Thursday; prosecutors sought 27 months, though he may be released because of time served. The U.S. attorney’s office did not directly address the leave but vowed to pursue threats and violence without regard to politics. It’s unclear who will represent the government.
