Putin’s mesmeric sway on Trump

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is again absorbing taunts from Donald Trump, who last week warned Ukraine would be destroyed unless it ceded territory to Russia and earlier told him "you don't have the cards." Meanwhile Vladimir Putin received a second meeting with Trump, hosted by Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, even as Europe moves to channel most of Russia’s frozen $200bn to Kyiv and Ukraine expands strikes deep inside Russia. The Economist reports 100,000 Russian troops killed in 2025. Despite minimal territorial gains, U.S. support has stalled since spring 2024, with Trump vowing future arms would be sold, not donated.
