Louvre failed to spot jewel thieves early enough, says museum boss

The Louvre’s director, Laurence des Cars, admitted serious security failures after a gang stole €88m in crown jewels in under ten minutes from the Gallery of Apollo. She told senators aging, misdirected CCTV left the perimeter exposed, saying, “We failed these jewels.” Four thieves used a truck ladder at 09:30, taking eight pieces including Napoleon’s diamond-and-emerald necklace, and dropping—damaging—Empress Eugenie’s crown, which may be restored.
