Thieves stole €88 million in crown jewels from the Louvre in under eight minutes, riding a stolen basket lift to a window and slicing open two Apollo Gallery cases with disc cutters. Alarms sounded, visitors were evacuated, and police were alerted, but the crew fled at 9:38 a.m. on scooters, leaving tools and a yellow jacket. Empress Eugénie’s crown was recovered outside; eight other objects remain missing. The museum’s director called it a "terrible failure." With the culprits still at large, the Louvre reopened Oct. 22 as about 100 investigators sift evidence.
