Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro raises death toll from police raid to 132

Rio de Janeiro’s public defender said 132 people were killed in Tuesday’s raids on drug traffickers, more than double the official toll. Mourners gathered in nearby streets as bodies lay on the road. Governor Claudio Castro put deaths at around 60 but warned the number would rise; four police officers died. The operation deployed 2,500 officers against the Comando Vermelho, with armoured vehicles, helicopters and drones amid heavy gunfire. Residents alleged executions, while Castro said those killed were criminals and called it “narcoterrorism.” Rights groups questioned the timing as Rio prepares for the C40 summit and Earthshot Prize.
