U.S. Sanctions Colombia’s Petro as Tensions Rise
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration sanctioned Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his wife, his son, and Interior Minister Armando Alberto Benedetti over alleged involvement in the global drug trade, sharply escalating tensions with Colombia’s first leftist leader. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Petro let cartels flourish; Trump threatened aid cuts and tariffs and called him "an illegal drug leader." Washington expanded maritime crackdowns to the eastern Pacific and will send an aircraft carrier after strikes that have killed at least 37 people. Petro, defending a nonrepressive drug policy, vowed to fight the allegations in U.S. courts amid record U.N.-reported coca cultivation.
