Poll: Most Americans Oppose East Wing Demolition

Most Americans reject tearing down the White House’s East Wing to build President Donald Trump’s 90,000-square-foot ballroom funded by $300 million in private donations, an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll finds. Fifty-six percent oppose the plan (45% strongly), 28% support it, and 16% are unsure. Views split by party: 62% of Republicans back it, 88% of Democrats oppose, and 61% of independents oppose. Intensity spikes among strong Trump approvers (58% strongly support) and strong disapprovers (82% strongly oppose). The Oct. 24–28, 2025 online survey sampled 2,725 adults (±1.9 points).
