California votes on Democratic congressional map

California voters will decide Tuesday whether to adopt a Democratic-backed congressional map that could shift up to five U.S. House seats and potentially give the party control of as many as 48 of the state’s 52 districts. Proposition 50 would lock in the Legislature’s August map for three election cycles before the independent commission returns after the 2030 Census. Gov. Gavin Newsom and national Democrats lead a well-funded Yes campaign, outspending opponents backed by prominent Republicans and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The outcome could influence control of the House after the 2026 midterms.
