New Orleans city councilmember Helena Moreno won the mayor’s race Saturday, taking 55% of the vote and avoiding a runoff, preliminary results show. The Democrat will succeed LaToya Cantrell, who is term-limited after a turbulent second term marked by clashes with the council and a 2022 recall effort. Cantrell was indicted in August and has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, fraud and obstruction. Moreno, 48, raised more than $3.4 million and campaigned on public safety, economic development and improved city services. Born in Mexico, she moved to the U.S. at 8 and later worked in journalism before entering politics.
