A Rome medieval tower partially collapses, badly injuring a worker

Firefighters in Rome battled a perilous rescue after the medieval Torre dei Conti partially collapsed during renovation Monday, trapping a worker for hours and critically injuring another. Repeated structural failures sent up smoke and debris, forcing teams to retreat from aerial ladders and switch to a drone, officials said. Three workers were rescued unharmed; no firefighters were hurt. Prefect Lamberto Giannini reported signs of life from the trapped man and warned the operation would be long. Tourists watched as fresh collapses interrupted efforts near the medieval tower.
