Madagascar President Warns of Attempted Coup Amid Protests

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina said Sunday an attempted coup is underway, a day after members of the elite CAPSAT unit joined youth-led protests urging him to step down. His office condemned an “illegal” bid to seize power and urged unity to defend constitutional order. Demonstrations by “Gen Z Madagascar” over outages and alleged corruption have rocked the country for three weeks; the U.N. says at least 22 are dead, a toll the government disputes. Despite curfews and Rajoelina firing his government on Sept. 29 and naming a military general prime minister, Saturday’s protests were among the largest.
