ICE Sends Recruits Before Vetting; Dismissals Surge

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has sent recruits to its Georgia training academy before completing background checks, later discovering failed drug tests, disqualifying criminal histories and unmet physical or academic standards, according to current and former DHS officials. Internal data show more than 200 recruits were dismissed in training during a hiring surge tied to President Trump’s deportation push; nearly half failed a written exam, and others faltered on fitness. DHS disputes the figures and says most new hires are prior-service officers. Training was shortened to six weeks as HR rushes to process 150,000 applicants amid $50,000 signing bonuses.
