Rome medieval tower partially collapses during renovations

Firefighters in Rome battled a dangerous, shifting structure to reach a worker trapped for hours after the medieval Torre dei Conti partially collapsed during renovation on Monday, critically injuring another. Crews repeatedly retreated as fresh collapses sent up smoke and debris, switching to drones, aerial ladders and a crane with giant tubes to clear rubble. Three workers were rescued unharmed. Officials reported “signs of life” from the trapped man and called it a long, risky operation, as hundreds of onlookers watched and witnesses described two loud noises and a diagonal fall.
