Minister denies Powell role in collapsed China case

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said Jonathan Powell had no role in the substance or evidence behind the collapsed spying case against Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry, who deny the claims. The Crown Prosecution Service said the trial failed because the government did not provide evidence describing China as a national security threat. Conservatives have lodged an urgent parliamentary question and suggested Powell withheld material; Chris Philp said he should resign if responsible. The prime minister argued prosecutors could only reflect the previous government's policy. The CPS said the case no longer met its evidential test.
